The DG NACA meets with the Postmaster General of the Federation and CEO, Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) Ms. Tola Odeyemi and her team

Abuja, Nigeria – April 21, 2024

The Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), welcomed the Postmaster General (PMG) and her team on Friday 19th April, 2024. The PMG’s visit served as an opportunity to congratulate the DG on her recent appointment and discuss a collaborative initiative between NACA and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST).

This initiative stems from the recommendations of the National Integrated Specimen Referral Network (NiSRN) evaluation. With support from the Global Fund RSSH GC6 grant, NACA has provided funding for a pilot program utilizing NIPOST for integrated specimen referral in Abia and Taraba states.

The pilot aims to assess the feasibility of using NIPOST as a more affordable and sustainable option for specimen transport within Nigeria. To facilitate this, NACA has provided various resources:

  • Upgraded facilities: 10 NIPOST locations in Abia and Taraba have been enhanced to meet the specific requirements for efficient and high-quality specimen transport.
  • Technical Support: A Technical Service Organization (TSO) will be engaged to assist NIPOST throughout the pilot period.
  • Equipment: Essential supplies have been provided, including cryoboxes, sample carrier boxes, rider protection kits, freezers, cold storage vans, and motorcycles.

This pilot program will evaluate the effectiveness of leveraging NIPOST’s network for specimen transport, potentially paving the way for a more cost-effective and long-lasting solution for Nigeria’s healthcare system.
