Uganda: HIV/AIDS Still Major Contributing Factor to Orphanage

The latest population Report 2008/9 has indicated that wars and HIV/Aids prevalence in Uganda are still the leading factors that contribute to orphanage in the country.

The report which was conducted by the Population Secretariat in Kampala indicates that since 1980 Uganda has continued to grapple with HIV/Aids scourge in which millions of Ugandans have lost their lives and as a result many children have been left parentless.

While the central, western and some parts in Eastern Uganda have continued to enjoy relative peace over the last 20 years, the people in northern have been negatively affected by conflicts which resulted to many deaths and uncontrolled spread of HIV/Aids.

The report states that the deaths that happened from conflicts are also said to have a big contribution to the many orphans Uganda has today.

It further states that the phenomenon of orphans in Uganda is coupled with many challenges including limited financial resources and weakening of social support.
